Family photoshoots are a wonderful way to capture the love and organic moments shared between your family. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion, marking a milestone, or simply want to create lasting memories, planning your photoshoot carefully can make all the difference. As an Orange County photographer, I'm excited to share my top tips to ensure your family photoshoot is as enjoyable and successful as possible.
Choose The Perfect Location
Orange County is full of picturesque spots that make for beautiful backdrops. Whether you prefer a beach setting, a lush garden, or an urban scene, the location you choose can set the tone for your photos. Here are a few of my favorites:
Beachfront Bliss: Locations like Laguna Beach and Crystal Cove offer stunning coastal views and soft, golden light. Early mornings or late afternoons are perfect for capturing that dreamy, sunlit effect.
Nature’s Beauty: For a more natural backdrop, consider the lush landscapes of Irvine Regional Park or the scenic trails of Santiago Canyon.
Urban Charm: If you’re drawn to modern and vibrant scenes, downtown San Juan Capistrano or the historic district of Old Towne Orange provide fantastic options.
Coordinate Your Wardrobe
Your wardrobe can make a big impact on the overall feel of your photos. Aim for outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Here are a few tips:
Color Palette: I always recommend neutrals, whites, creams, and earthy-toned colors that visually fit into the natural surroundings we are shooting in! Look for a something you won't regret wearing in 5 years. Maybe something that has already stood the test of time. Use what I call: "The 5 and 5 rule." 5 years ago you could have probably worn it, and in 5 years you could still wear it!
Comfort is Key: Make sure you can move in your outfit svery easily, and it's a huge added bonus if the piece itself moves as well! TRY: Flowy, airy, fun, textured, soft, etc... AVOID: Stiff, crisp, business, startchy, etc...
Layers and Accessories: Adding layers and accessories can enhance your look. Scarves, hats, and jackets can add texture and interest, but avoid overly busy patterns that can distract from the main focus—you and your family.
Timing is Everything
Lighting plays a crucial role in photography, so timing your shoot is essential for achieving beautiful results.
Golden Hour Magic: The hour just after sunrise and just before sunset, known as golden hour, offers soft, warm light that enhances skin tones and adds a magical glow to your photos. If possible, schedule your shoot during these times for the best results.
Avoid Harsh Midday Sun: The bright, harsh light of midday can cause unflattering shadows and squinting. If you must shoot during this time, look for shaded areas or consider using reflectors to soften the light.
Prepare the Kids (and Pets!)
Family photoshoots are often a lot more fun when everyone is prepared and in a positive mood.
Pre-Shoot Prep: Talk to your children about the shoot beforehand to get them excited. Explain that it’s a fun experience and involve them in choosing their outfits. Bring along a few favorite toys or snacks to keep them entertained.
Pet-Friendly Considerations: If you’re including pets in your shoot, ensure they are well-rested and comfortable. Bring their favorite toys or treats to help them stay calm and engaged.
Relax and Have Fun
The best photos come from documenting genuine moments of joy and connection. Here’s how to make sure your shoot is relaxed and enjoyable:
Be Yourself: Authentic moments often make the best memories. I encourage laughter, hugs, and organic interactions. I will guide you, but the best images are often spontaneous and documented without you knowing it.
Let Go of Perfection: Don’t stress about every little detail. Focus on enjoying the moment with your family. The imperfections often make the photos feel more real and relatable.
Trust Your Photographer: Remember, your photographer is there to help you create beautiful memories. Communicate any concerns or ideas you have, and trust their expertise to guide you through the process.
Ready to Capture Your Family Moments?
Planning a family photoshoot in Orange County can be an amazing experience with the right preparation. By choosing the perfect location, coordinating your wardrobe, timing your shoot well, preparing everyone involved, and keeping a relaxed attitude, you’ll set the stage for a successful session that captures the intimate fragments you will want to look back and remember.

An Elopement On The California Coast: Cambria
Nestled along the California coast past Morro Bay is the quiet beachside town of Cambria, California. Known for its breathtaking coastline, historic architecture and boutique shops, this is the perfect place for your intimate wedding or elopement.
Nestled along the California coast past Morro Bay is the quiet beachside town of Cambria, California. Known for its breathtaking coastline, historic architecture and boutique shops, this is the perfect place for your intimate wedding or elopement. As a Southern California couples photographer, Cambria has so many dreamy backdrops to choose from when it comes to planning your elopement. From the scenic drive up PCH to Moonstone beach, this town has no shortage of spots to choose from for photography locations.
Where To Stay
During my last trip to Cambria, I stayed at White Water. This boutique hotel overlooks Moonstone Beach and has a breataking walking path right along the beach offering the perfect backdrop for post ceremony elopement photos. The hotel has a cozy lobby, complete with a game room and bara nd passes the vibe check with flying colors. Breakfast is dropped to your room in the mornings in a picnic basket boasting an assortment of fresh jucies and local pasteries. The lobby bar is stocked with local beers and wines and offers a great selection of craft cocktails and small bites you can enjoy by the fire as you take in the views of the famous Moonstone Beach. Bike rentals are offered daily and are the perfect way to get around town during your stay.
Where To Eat
While staying in Cambria, The Hidden Kitchen is a MUST for breakfast. Known for its organic and gluten free menu options, this place is my go to for breakfast on your first morning. I highly reccomend the San Luis Sunrise Waffle.
Stop number two will be my favorite spot for dinner, The Sea Chest Oyster Bar. A short bike ride down the road from White Water is the Sea Chest. With some of the best oysters on the coast and a fantastic wine list this place will have a line an hour or two before they open. Make sure to bring cash as they do not take credit cards or reservations. I recommend going early to get your name on the wait list.
Another dinner option will be Madelines Restaurant and Wine Cellar. The have a location in the heart of downtown and a wine bar location close to Mooonstone Beach. They do take reservations so it’s best to call ahead but walk in seating is available.
For lunch on the way back down the coast is High Steet Deli. IYKYK. One of the best sando’s around, I love the Dutch Crunch. We always stop at the High Street location in SLO and they will have a wait, so order online if you’re looking to save some time! They also have another location in Baywood Park.
What To Do
If staying along the strand near moonstone beach you will see most properties offer cozy adorondak chairs on the lawns perfect for watching the sunset. White Water offers bike rentals perfect for exploring around town and the beach path offers the perfect walk for evening or early morning strolls. Cambria is just north of Cayucos and Morro Bay and south of Hearst Castle. Hwy 101 is my favorite drive and has so many beach and day camp spots, I recommend heading to Sotos True Earth Market and packing a picnic with some local wine and deli items and driving up the coast to explore.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Your Engagement Photographer in Orange County, CA
Choosing The Right Photographer For Your Engagement Session
Are you recently engaged and searching for the perfect Orange County photographer to capture your love story? Choosing the right engagement photographer is a crucial decision, as your photos will preserve cherished memories for years to come. Here’s your ultimate guide to navigating this exciting process.
Why Choosing The Right Engagement Photographer Matters
Your engagement photos will serve as a timeless reminder of the beginning of your journey together. They should reflect your personalities, capture genuine emotions, and showcase the beauty of Orange County’s landscapes. When selecting an engagement photographer in Orange County, consider these key factors: portfolio and style. Review the photographer’s portfolio to ensure their style aligns with your vision. Look for diversity in locations and lighting to gauge their versatility.
Booking
I always advise my couples to book a minimum of 3 months in advance and to choose a weekday. I typically offer sessions Monday-Friday and while I do not mind working the occasional weekend, crowds can be heavier, especially if we are shooting in a popular tourist destination like Laguna Beach. Booking your session early will help ensure you are getting the date you want! Late Summer and early fall are my busiest for couples sessions so make sure to reach out in early summer to secure your dates!
Reviews and Testimonials
Read reviews from past clients to gauge their satisfaction and the photographer’s professionalism. Positive testimonials speak volumes about their service quality. You can see some of my reviews here
Location Choices In Orange County For Your Engagement Session
Some of my couples have a location in mind prior to booking with me, while others are dependent on my expertise of where to go. After booking I always send out an engagement questionnaire. This helps me get to know my couples a bit better! Finding out where you met, your shared interests, where your first date was, maybe you love the beach or maybe you both have a love for art and want to shoot at a gallery in Laguna Beach. These are all things I take into consideration when choosing a location that suits your relationship the best! What photography style catches your attention the most? Do you like an editorial style? Museums can offer a minimal backdrop for this kind of shoot. Maybe you want to capture a day in your normal life like a walk around a neighborhood or making dinner together. Whether you want to rent a vintage car and chase the sunset down PCH or frolic in tall grass in a field. I promise we will find the perfect location for you! Dependent on the location you choose, some places will requie a permit to shoot there.
Outfits
Are you looking into booking a shorter shoot? 30 minute packages include one outfit choice where as an hour or full day session will have time for multiple outfit changes ( you can learn more about our investemen packages here). My number one suggestion is to ALWAYS wear something that you are comfortable in. Trying on your outfits before the time of your shoot is a crucial part in making sure you feel your best! How does your outfit look alone? How do your choices look when paired together? Aside from location, I believe your outfits highly influence the outcome of your photos. Make sure to coordinate outfits without matching. Here are a few other things to ask yourselves when choosing outfits; does it match the location of our session? If I saw someone wearing this walking down the street would I like it? Do the shoes I chose pair well with the clothing choice? Most importantly, do I feel confident and comfortable? For longer sessions, you have a bit more freedom to bring outfit choices! Do you want to jump in the water after? Bring a bathing suit! If the first look of your shoot is more laid back, let your second outfit be a bit more formal! For higher end, editorial style sessions there are so many great resources for dress and suit rentals!
Outfit Tips
Always bring a comfortable pair of shoes to walk in if you are wearing heels or dress shoes for your session.
Make sure your outfit is free of wrinkles and stains! Steaming is a great way to reduce the chance of wrinkles while inspecting the clothing before trying on can help to ensure you dont see any stains on it.
When selecting your outfits, make sure you like how it looks from all angles, front, back and the side.
The Day Of Your Session
Being on time is probably the most important part here! I always recommend getting there 10-15 minutes early to do that last minute hair and make up check, change into your outfits if you drove there in something else. Being rushed is not a fun way to start off your shoot so allow yourself a little extra time!
Clean your ring! For enagagement sessions, there is always a mixture of detail shots and shots from further way! There is nothing worse than getting your photos back and seeing a dirty ring!
Get your nails done! Touching on the subject above, your ring and hands will play a big role in this session! Getting a manicure the day before or the morning of is ALWAYS a good idea!
If getting your hair done, I recommend to get it done the evening before or the morning of! Some hair types with curls can need a day to set and not get frizzy while more fine hair may need to be done the morning of. Hear me out, I know everyone has different types and textures of hair but if your hair looking good is something that is important to you, get it done! You will not regret it! Same goes for makeup, if it is something you keep thinking about, invest in a great makeup artist the day of. Dont forget to bring a few items so you can touch up before the shoot!
Calm Your Nerves! I get it! Standing and posing in front of a camera can feel TOTALLY unnatural! Not many people feel comfortable in front of a camera and that is totally normal! I will be there every step of the way to help guide you through prompts. My end goal is to capture you two being you! Being affectionate during a shoot can totally feel overwhelming and intimidating but think of it as me documenting your date night! Use it as an opportunity to have a practice session leading up to your wedding day! There are also some locations that offer a bit more privacy if we need it because I understand PDA is not everyones love language! Being a documentary style photographer means I will be directing you through prompts and suggestions, I promise I won't just leave you there asking to smile directly at me! Think of it like your favorite rom com, setting up scenes, constantly in motion. MOVING IS YOUR FRIEND. For one prompt, I might ask you to tell her a secret, the next I might ask you to tell each other jokes, the key is to stay consistenly moving. Pushing eachother in an out, playing a game of tag or swaying back and forth are all going to be part of capturing the kind of photos you want. Stay in the moment and really embrace where you are at and don't forget to breathe! Being silly with your partner is highly encouraged! It will create more organic photos. If you are wanting more serious, editorial style photos, YOU HAVE TO BRING THE VIBE. A serious face can go just as far as a smile. Use your engagement shoot as just another date night, have a sweet sit down dinner before or go grab your favorite cocktail!
Tips For Planning Your Engagement Session
Planning Your Engagement Session
Timing
While California doesn't offer as much changing of the seasons, it will have a change in lighting * hello day light savings*. One key factor to consider when choosing your location is the time of year you want your session as well as the time of day. Fall and winter may come with less crowds, empty beaches and less traffic but it also comes with shorter days. Spring in California is a perfect choice if you are romanticizing the idea of fresh wildflowers and grassy fields. Summer allows you warmer weather, later nights and dips in the ocean but can also boast more tourists. If you are wanting an outdoor session, I always book around the sun! 1-2 hours before sunset can offer that golden hour warm, romantic lighting ideal for an engagement session. When shooting at the beach, closer to sunset is an option as I can shoot for longer into blue hour. Shooting in other locations may be earlier depening on when the sun will dip behind a mountain or nearby buildings.
Booking
I always advise my couples to book a minimum of 3 months in advance and to choose a weekday. I offer sessions Monday-Friday and while I do not mind working the occasional weekend, crowds can be heavier, especially if we are shooting in a popular tourist destination like Laguna Beach or San Diego. Tips For Planning Your Maternity Shoot
A Step by Step Guide On Planning Your Maternity Sessions
Early Motherhood
There are few things more beautiful than the journey into motherhood. It is something to be celebrated and cherished. For alot of women, it is something they also want documented. A simple way to turn back time to where it all began. That is where I come in, if we haven't met, Hi! I'm Alex and I am a Southern California based photograpgher specializing in maternity photography.
When Is The Best Time To Schedule My Maternity Shoot?
I always recommend the 34-36 week mark! If that if not attainable for you, I would still shoot for your thrid trimester. I do however recommend booking your session upto 3 months in advance.
Choosing Your Location
Location for maternity sessions is a key part when booking as it will set the tone for your photos! Whether you are wanting something intimate at home or something immersing you outside in nature, take the time to decide a place that is special and holds meaning to you and your growing family. If you have any limitations during your pregnancy, be sure to tell your photographer prior to your session and to choose a location that will work for you. If choosing to have an outdoor session, make sure to take seasons into account. Summer will yield longer days and more light but also more tourists. Fall and Winter may have colder tempatures but less crowds. Spring will boast wildflower covered fields and fresh green grass.
Choosing Your Outfit
Aside from choosing a location, outfits will be the most important part. Neutrals will forever be my favorite for a maternity shoot. There is something about a flowy white dress or a cream button down exposing your growing bump that will is so classic and timeless. You want to make sure whatever outfit you choose, it is something you feel confident and comfortable in. Pinterest can be a wonderful resource for inspiration. I remind my clients that you want your growing bump to remain the main focus, too many patterns or bright colors can easily become distracting in photos. Textures such as linen, lace and knits always add a soft touch to maternity photos and shoot well.
Should I Add A Some Nude Shots?
This is one of the number one questions I receive from clients booking maternity sessions and the answer is IT IS COMPLETELY UPTO YOU! If documenting the changes in your body is something you want to remember I highly recommend considering it! When shot correctly, it can be done in such a tasteful and elegant way. Motherhood is such an intimate and vulnerble journey so why not document the real and raw parts of it if it is important to you! Showing more skin or less skin should always be the decision of the client.
Should I Do A Solo Session or Include My Partner?
This is another question I often receive, why not do both! A majority of my sessions are solo with the mother but if you are on the fence about including your partner, I think adding them into part of your session should be a priority! You do not want to look back and have regrets, especially if this is your first pregnancy.
Other Tips
Pamper yourself!! If being pregnant isn't enough of a reason, portraits are an investment. Getting your hair and makeup done can be just one more way to help you feel even more beautiful and confident!
Get a manicure, maternity shoots often consist of alot of photos holding your bump, so you want to have your nails and hands looking their best!
If planning on showing your belly or any skin, make sure to moistureize before your session.
Wear loose clothing prior to your shoot, tight clothing will leave marks on the skin and we don't want those showing up in photos!
Share your vision with your photographer, mood boards on Pinterest are an easy way to share your inspiration at the click of a button!
Get plenty of rest the day before and make sure to keep hydrated and your blood sugar where it should be.
Direct Flash Engagement Photos: A Night Out In Los Angeles
Your Guide On Direct Flash Engagement Photos
A Downtown Bar
Alex and Pat had their first date at a bar so it seemed fitting to shoot their engagement photos at one. A little bar nestled off sunset made for the perfect backdrop for these photos. They loved the idea of a more elegant and editorial style with the feel of film photography.
Tips For Your Flash Engagement Session
When choosing a photographer, make sure this trendy style is one they have shot before or that they are comfortable when shooting with a flash. Gathering inspiration photos on Pinterest can be a good resource and allows you to send a mood board directly to your photograpgher with some ideas!
Make sure you like the normal work and editing of the photograpgher you choose. Most photograpghers will have a set editing style and will mix this with the flash photos in your final gallery.
Outfit choice and location choice will be two key things for this type of session. If you are wanting a more editorial feel, you will need an elevated vibe with your clothing. I always suggest running outfits by your photograpgher before your session as they know what may look best for your specific location. If you are looking for a more paparazzi style photos, bars, hotel lobbys and downtown urban areas can be great places to shoot direct flash sessions.
